Smart House Number

Overview

Smart House Number is an IoT address display system designed to improve home visibility at night and during emergencies. The product combines outdoor-ready hardware, embedded firmware, mobile app control, and backend infrastructure into a full-stack connected device.

Highlights

  • Automatic dusk-to-dawn operation based on ambient light sensing
  • Special LED modes for emergency alerts and delivery scenarios
  • Mobile configuration with real-time device control
  • Secure OTA firmware updates and cloud-based device tracking

Challenges

  • Operate reliably outdoors across extreme temperatures from -40°C to +85°C
  • Support modular digit architecture for flexible address assembly
  • Enable simple plug-and-play installation for end users
  • Provide secure mobile onboarding, OTA updates, and remote configuration

Solutions

  • Designed a 4-layer PCB with epoxy conformal coating for waterproofing and durability
  • Used magnetic 2-pin pogo connector for 12V DC input and marine-grade modular connectors for daisy-chaining digits
  • Developed firmware in C++ with ESP-IDF for ESP32-C6, including dusk-to-dawn sensing, LED modes, provisioning, and secure HTTPS OTA
  • Built a cross-platform mobile app with .NET MAUI and Swift/SwiftUI for Bluetooth pairing, LED control, emergency trigger, and push notifications
  • Implemented a backend with .NET Core, PostgreSQL, Azure, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines

Features

  • Normal, delivery, and emergency flashing LED modes
  • BLE or Wi-Fi provisioning for initial setup
  • Brightness, color, and preset alert mode control
  • OTA firmware versioning, rollback, and logging
  • Internal dashboard for device tracking

Key Results

  • MVP delivered in 12 weeks
  • Passed 45+ days of continuous outdoor testing
  • Setup time reduced to under 3 minutes per unit
  • 500+ units successfully deployed across the U.S.
